BizJournals: Municipalities becoming more prominent target for cybercrime

Municipalities are being attacked and their data is being held ransom by cybercriminals.

Recently, 22 cities in Texas were hit with simultaneous ransomware attacks. Ransomware, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is a type of malicious software, or malware, designed to deny access to a computer system or data until a ransom is paid. The FBI said that ransomware is one of the top two reasons for monetary loss in the more than 4 million cybersecurity complaints it has received.

The attack on the 22 cities was a hot topic during two recent back-to-back conferences in San Antonio.
